Hi Paolo,

Regarding the smearing, yes indeed I was using the Methfessel-
Paxton broadening.  When I used the simple Gaussian 
broadening, I received only positive weights.  Thank you very 
much Paolo and Andrea.

Also thank you for clearing up the independent variable 
question.  I believed they were the k-points, but I could not 
find this information in the code so I felt inclined to ask.
