[Wannier] Property of the hopping term in MLWFs

Dear all,
I wonder how the hopping term decays when it goes to further neighbours:
H_ij=< W_i | H | W_j >
I suppose that this term should decay exponentially as a function of the
distance between the centres of W_i and W_j, but I cannot find a very rigid
argument. Would you please give some comments on this or suggestions of
reference that discusses about this issue? Thank you very much in advance.
