Dear all,
I am writing to let you know that, from June 22 to July 3, we will be organizing a CECAM summer school at SISSA (Trieste, Italy) for undergraduate students:
https://www.cecam.org/workshop-details/summer-school-on-molecular-dynamics-for-materials-science-nanotechnology-and-biophysics-1540
The school is specifically designed for beginners and is particularly well suited to students with a background in physics or chemistry who would like to move from theory to practice and learn how to carry out atomistic simulations.
Over the course of two intensive weeks, participants will:
* learn the fundamentals of classical molecular dynamics, including force fields, integrators, thermostats, and enhanced sampling methods;
* receive an introduction to quantum chemistry and density functional theory;
* explore applications in condensed matter physics and materials science, ranging from band theory to magnetism and topology, as well as phonons (DFPT) and strongly correlated systems, through hands-on exercises based on Quantum ESPRESSO;
* discover how machine-learning and neural-network interatomic potentials are constructed and trained;
* take part in several practical laboratory sessions, during which they will run their own simulations.
Broadly speaking, the school will devote about one third of the programme to molecular dynamics, one third to quantum chemistry, and one third to solid-state physics and materials science, with substantial emphasis on hands-on activities. A detailed programme is available at the link above.
The school is being organized together with Giuseppe Brancato (SNS) and Giovanni Bussi (SISSA). Many of the lectures and practical sessions will be delivered by speakers and teaching assistants from Trieste and Pisa (a full list is provided in the programme), with additional contributions from Mark Tuckerman (NYU), Cecilia Clementi (Freie Universität Berlin), and Nicola Marzari (EPFL/PSI/Cambridge).
There is a small registration fee of EUR 100. Accommodation for 13 nights, 10 meals, and the social dinner will be covered by the workshop budget.
*The application deadline is March 22.*
If you think this may be of interest, I would be very grateful if you could share this opportunity or bring it to the attention of any undergraduate students or early-career collaborators who might be interested.
Thank you.
