Typing: conda deactivate
Solved the problem, pwgui starts right up. As you suggested it is the conda environment that was the problem. Perhaps it was trivial, but I am a complete novice in conda.

the (base) in your prompt means you are running inside a conda environment, assuming you have installed the packages with apt, conda  environment may be hiding the paths where those packages are installed.
   Run

conda  deactivate

And run again pwgui

Thank you for your suggestion. It does not fix the issue with qe-7.4.1. I get the same error messages

I am unfamiliar with quantum mobile, but it seems like it misses
Itk/Iwidgets. Since quantum mobile is Ubuntu based, you can install it
with:

sudo apt install iwidgets4
