Because the energy as a function of the unit-cell shape/volume is discontinuous at constant cutoff.

As I tried to hint in a previous post, the point here is that a few kbar is an exceedingly small pressure for most purposes. Whether or not this is the case depends on the magnitude of the derivative of the quantity one is interested in with respect to pressure/volume. The relation between the two depends of course on the bulk modulus.
