at line 120 of average.f90:

     READ (inunit, *, err = 1100, iostat = ios) nfile
     IF (nfile<=0.or.nfile>nfilemax) CALL errore ('average ', &
          'nfile is wrong ', 1)

Add  some "print *, .." and you will see what happens and why
