Paolo, Alain, Gabriele,

I took Paolo's advice and configured with no arguments and then it  
complied straight away.  Example01 ran fine.  Thanks to all of you for  
getting me started.

Now it's on to learning how to launch parallel jobs and then to do  
some real science.
