1) use the new version
2) read and understand error messages. If your computer says:
    "ar: iotk_attr+CHARACTER1_0.o: No such file or directory"
    this means that iotk_attr+CHARACTER1_0.o is not there, and
    it is not there because iotk_attr+CHARACTER1_0.f90 was not
    compiled. Why wasn't it compiled?
