is this because the amount of memory divided by number of cores is exactly 2Gbyte (per core)?

If memory is your big concern try to run Quantum ESPRESSO disabling MPI and enabling OpenMP. If you are using GNU compilers (GCC/GFORTAN), I do suggest or to get a multi-threaded BLAS like OpenBLAS (http://www.openblas.net/) or to install the academic non commercial version of the Intel compiler suite.
