oops, fixed (I think). Old-style configuration not supported
any longer in this case.

which means exactly that: "cannot run Fortran 77 compiled
programs". On the IBM-SP machine I used, this morning I 
had the same problem.  It was driving me nuts until Gerardo 
explained what was happening: interactive programs are 
executed in a special job queue. The queue was full and
configure didn't work. Maybe something similar applies to your
case as well: if you cannot execute an executable as "./a.out",
configure will not work.
